Ivory Toldson, Ph.D. Professor of Counseling Psychology More Details Ivory Toldson, Ph.D. Professor of Counseling Psychology Ivory Toldson, Ph.D., is a professor of counseling psychology at Howard University, president and CEO of the Quality Education for Minorities Network, and editor-in-chief of The Journal of Negro Education. In the past, he served as the executive director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities under President Barack Obama, as well as the senior research analyst for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. Toldson is a prolific scholar and myth buster with more than 60 publications under his name, including four books. His most recent book, published in January 2019, is titled “No BS (Bad Stats): Black People Need People Who Believe in Black People Enough Not to Believe Every Bad Thing They Hear About Black People.” In this new book, Toldson uses data analysis, anecdotes and commentary to debunk common myths about educating Black children. His motivation for writing this work comes from talking with people who had lost hope due to negative statistics about young Black men. He found that the more he studied these statistics, the more he found that they were often incorrect, poorly contextualized, or incomplete. “No BS” comes from a desire to find solutions and combat misinformation. It is a landmark work in an expansive body of research dedicated to educational equity. “I want Black scholars to claim authority over their expertise and remove shackles that have been placed on them.” Talitha Washington, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Mathematics More Details Talitha Washington, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Mathematics Originally From: Evansville, Indiana Talitha Washington, Ph.D., is an associate professor of Mathematics at Howard University and a program director in the National Science Foundation (NSF) Convergence Accelerator (C-Accel). Her research focuses on the applications of differential equations to biology and engineering, as well as the development of nonstandard finite difference schemes to numerically solve dynamical systems. Washington is an advocate for diversity in STEM, and she is passionate about improving access to STEM subjects for students of color. Her biographical work on Elbert Frank Cox, the first Black scholar to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics and a fellow Evansville native, has been shared on radio and television stations. In 2019, she received a STEM Innovator Award at the Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) STEM Conference, as well as an Outstanding Faculty Award from Howard University. She takes great pride in cultivating opportunities for African Americans in STEM. In addition to her work as a mathematician, Washington is an in-demand motivational speaker who enjoys sharing her expertise on applied mathematics and diversity to a wide range of audiences. “For the young girls out there: Have fun with mathematics. Pursue your dreams.” Dr. Bahiyyah Muhammad Professor of Sociology and Criminology More Details Dr. Bahiyyah Muhammad Professor of Sociology and Criminology Originally From: Queens, New York Dr. Bahiyyah Muhammad is a professor of Sociology and Criminology at Howard University. In addition to her ethnographic work on the lived experiences of children of incarcerated parents, Dr. Muhammad is the designer of one of the most popular programs at HU, called Inside Out: Crime & Justice. The Inside Out program is a series of courses where Howard students visit local prisons and juvenile detention centers to learn alongside incarcerated individuals, creating dialogue and breaking stigma in a “restorative justice circle” format. Unlike other Inside Out programs, Dr. Muhammad’s classes take place in the cell block where incarcerated students live their day-to-day lives, including them in the experience. Students come out of Dr. Muhammad’s courses inspired to create change in their communities and in their own lives. The transformative nature of the courses has earned them the nickname of “The Dr. Muhammad Experience,” which Dr. Muhammad herself explains as a philosophy that provides students the opportunity to think outside of the box. “At a time when the world has become more divided and indecisive, Howard is one.” Excellence in Truth and Service is reflected in all that we do. Veritas et Utilitas. Excellence in Truth and Service is reflected in all that we do. News View All March 11, 2020 Howard University Transitions to Online and Remote Instruction The University will shift courses to online and remote instruction following Spring Break from March 23, 2020 through April 6, 2020. All faculty should move their courses to online or alternative delivery by March 23, 2020. We will maintain online instruction through April 6, 2020. Over the period of online instruction (March 23, 2020 – April 6, 2020), we will also assess impacts of the change in instructional methodology, and status of the outbreak locally, during this time. A status update will be provided to the campus community by March 25, 2020 to determine if any further extension of the implementation of online instruction will be warranted, as conditions evolve.
